Description
TREK Pilot 5.9
full CARBON road bike
super rare 63cm frameset (relaxed geometry for a very comfortable fit) (see sizing info below)***
custom Project One “Sky Blue” metallic paint from Trek workshop in Waterloo, Wi
$6000+ new as built
Shimano Dura Ace shifters & front derailleur (recently swapped out original Dura Ace rear derailleur to a new, longer cage Deore to allow a larger cassette range–for even better mountain riding)
newer Bontrager Race wheels (take offs from a newer Trek)
Continental Grand Prix 4000s tires (in very good condition)
Bontrager Race X Lite carbon compact crankset (50/36)
Bontrager Race XXX Lite seatpost, stem, and drop bars (some of the lightest, strongest carbon components you can buy)
Brake calipers on the Pilots are all Shimano R600 long reach (to allow for wider than normal tires, fenders, etc). (Dura Ace / Ultegra / 105 calipers max out @ 25 to 28mm widths–depending on the wheel width.)
Portland Design Works full metal fenders (these can be easily removed and re-installed; excellent for commuting and wet weather riding / touring). $120 new
Tubes, tires, and bar wrap all in very good condition. Chain replaced about 4 months ago.
Just detailed the bike and had it tuned, lubed, detailed, and wheels trued…. So it needs nothing at all. Chain and cassette replaced about 4 months ago so 1000’s of miles left on those.
Super clean, one owner bike. Middle-aged fella up in the Pacific Northwest who just upgraded to a new Trek Domane w/ disc brakes–which he needed for the wetter, steeper terrain he rides in.
I have the original Dura Ace 7800, short cage rear derailleur if you’d rather have that on the bike. Not a big deal to swap that out. The Dura Ace will be a bit lighter… but not as durable as the Deore–which is really a mountain / touring groupset.
*** If you are 6′-3″ and up, this bike may work for you. If you’re over 6′-7″ it still may be an option… we’d just have to put you on it to see how much adjusting / fitting needs to be done.
The Trek Pilot series (5.0 / 5.2 / 5.9) is the endurance / touring version of the best selling carbon road bikes of all times (Trek 5000 / 5200 / 5900 series). Trek has built this same basic OCLV 120 / 110 carbon frame since around 1993, tweaking and improving it every single year. This particular frame is the last gen version–2006/2007–before they came out with the replacement model–now called the Domane.
All of the Pilot’s are very highly rated and reviewed and are generally comparable to a Specialized Roubaix / Ruby, a Cannondale Synapse, a Giant Defy, etc.
This bike is extremely versatile. It is basically an endurance / touring version of a high end road racing bike–the same basic bikes that were ridden by the US Postal Team in multiple (7) Tour de France victories. These bikes are simply engineered to be more comfortable on longer rides–but still capable of very fast speeds and very sharp handling. (I leave a 2004 Pilot 5.0 up in Colorado for mountain and desert riding so I’ve spent a LOT of time on these bikes. They are great climbers and I’ve hit 45mph+ on curvy descents through the San Juan mountains more than once on my trusty 5.0.)
Pilots also make excellent commuter bikes due to comfortable position and fender option w/ larger tires possible than most other road bikes.
Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, this is one of the best all around road bikes you can buy. (I have personally owned several carbon Pilots over the years and have ridden 100’s of miles on them… all over the U.S.)
If you are looking for a TALL road bike–particularly carbon–your local choices are going to be VERY limited. It is super rare to find full carbon frames / bikes for sale larger than 60cm. 63cm is almost a unicorn.
